Title: Green AI: Opportunities, Challenges, and Recommendations for a Sustainable Future
Abstract: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping society and the environment in profound ways,
offering both transformative benefits and significant risks. This paper examines the dual
impact of AI, with a specific focus on its environmental implications. It introduces the
concept of Green AI—an approach aimed at making AI systems more energy-efficient
and ecologically sustainable throughout their lifecycle. The discussion highlights the
opportunities that Green AI presents, including optimized resource management,
reduced carbon footprints, and enhanced climate change mitigation. However, it also
addresses key challenges, such as high computational demands, lack of standardized
metrics, and potential trade-offs between performance and sustainability. Based on this
analysis, actionable recommendations are provided to guide researchers, policymakers,
and industry stakeholders in advancing Green AI practices. By integrating sustainability
into AI development, we can harness its potential to support both societal progress and
environmental stewardship.
